Brandwood’s Wonderful Jan Tchamani voted Age Uk’s Internet Champion!

Jan Tchamani, who lives in Brandwood House and is the Secretary of the
residents’ association and Project Co-ordinator for the estate’s
community garden and lottery-funded Social Inclusion Project, has
become Age UK’s new Internet Champion. At a gala awards night at the
Royal Society, London, on Monday evening she was presented with her
trophy by actress June Whitfield. Jan is one of two Internet Champions
selected by a panel of judges including her hero Stephen Fry to
encourage older people to use computers and get internet connected.
“The benefits of the internet for older people cannot be stressed
enough,” says Jan (55), “social media, Skype and a myriad of useful
websites provide a way of being in the world even when you can’t go
out, and a virtual encyclopaedia of information is at your fingertips.
There are two target groups of older people: the ‘digitally excluded’
who would like to have access but don’t have the opportunity – which
is why we run an IT Club on Tuesday mornings in our community room –
and the ‘digitally dismissive’ who still aren’t convinced of the
benefits – and it’s up to us to try and woo them!”IC 2013 AGE Uks Finalists
